There are many adjectives one can use to describe a fine chef: passionate, curious, facile, knowleagable, adventuresome, inventive, well-trained and daring. Add to this list the adjective »entrepreneurial« and »fine chef« can become »great chef« (Matsuhisa, N., Nobu the cookbook).
There is something in cooking that cought my interest recently. There is Jamie Oliver of course, who cannot pass unnoticed, but also all many other chefs, who succeeded to present and sucessfully sell the art of cooking with all the sizzling, drizzling, colourful and sensuous descriptions of the process of cooking and the product. Without of pouring the passion through different means of senses they would most certainly not gain so much interest and desire to try the same. How many managers you know explain their business with so much passion and adjectives.? Hey, its a creative process as well – it is active, juicy, colourful. And if a manager wants to achieve and create a spectacular taste – it always comes out of mixing an interesting variety of ingredients. Embrace difference in people and experiment the confrontation of opinions.
Have you tried cooking in a small kitchen without the right equipment? Sure you can do it – but you are limited to what you have got. On the other hand what a pleasure it is to have nice gadgets, colourful bowls, wide variety of fresh spices… And it does not take so much effort, just to keep in mind how enviroment can affect our attitude.
When the whole team is in action, there is no time to discuss and experiment new taste. Chefs communication has to be clear, his authority unquestioned. If he stumbles than food is served late, cold, clients complain on the service.
Often inspiration can be found in other fields – cooking, music, dancing, chating . Often we excell in what we do because of the love of life, the fullness of everything and willingness and courage to step out and lead with the initiative we give, with passionate attitude towards what we do, with openness to be enriched by difference in others.
